Have you read this week’s New York Magazine Double Issue on Sex? In the midst of the articles on the “Multiplicity of Desire” check out our new lego- inspired crayons in the Best Bets Section. These re-purposed, familiar stackable bricks are colorful, safe, durable crayons (13 colorful crayons per pack) so kids can build their art skills from the ground up. Stack a Doodle Crayons- $8.50.
We are thrilled that New York Magazine featured this cute Jam Jar Kit in this week’s mag as a Mother’s Day DIY present. Just pick some berries (or get them from the farmers market), can them (we’ve got lots of canning items too, including jars!), decorate and voila! Kit comes with stickers and paper jar covers with scalloped edges, plus a booklet with techniques and recipes, making it easy and fun to transform plain glass jars into pretty gifts. Or give this cute set to your mom and ask for a jar when she’s done bottling her favorite concoction! Jam Jar Kit- $14.95.
New York Magazine asked us what some of our FAVORITE new finds are for Spring and we immediately said, EARTH BLOCKS!!! These cool, lego-like blocks are made from all natural, organic materials- such as Tree Bark (as in the example above). Made from a composite of sawdust, bark, coffee bean skin, and green tea, these are a cool, green, and great-smelling alternative to plastic blocks. 50 blocks to a set. These will arrive April 6th, pre-order now… Earth Blocks Tree Bark, Earth Blocks Sawdust, Earth Blocks Coffee Bean, Earth Blocks Green Tea- $32 each.
Hydros Bottle, $29.95
The latest issue of New York Magazine is out, and they chose our Hydros Water Bottles as one of their “Best Bets” this week. There are so many styles out on the market, and new ones coming out every day. What makes the Hydros special is the built-in filter so you know your water is clean wherever you are. The bottles are also BPA-free and made in the US!
Check out some great press about the Pop Up Shop from New York Magazine- YEAH!!! In the Best Bets section of the magazine they called us POP UP SHOP OF THE WEEK!!!! They used a BEAUTIFUL picture Christopher took of our Beauty table in the Brooklyn Shop. Everything in the picture is available online too, check out our updated and upgraded BEAUTY section!!
New York Magazine is once again showing us some love in their Holiday Gift Guide! They chose to feature two of our favorites- Wrestler Matryoshkas and the Phrenology Head Wrap Sheet. We love New York Magazine!
These sheets are great for wrapping presents or covering books, but we think they’re perfectly frame-worthy. They also make a great gift–perfect for the psuedoscientist or student of human behavior in your life.
As many of you know, we’re crazy about all things matryoshka and lucha libre, and these clever toys offer the best of both worlds! We even had two lovely sisters from Toronto come visit us on a shopping trip, specifically for these dolls. One’s son fell in love with his sister’s matryoshkas, and wanted a more masculine set of his own. Wrestler Matroyshkas to the rescue!!

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Everyone. In high school a dear friend (Jeff Fletcher was his name, wherever you are-Fletch I miss you!) gave me a book of his teachings and quotes and all these many years later I still treasure that book and MLK, Jr’s words. I took a tour of his Birthplace and home when I lived (briefly in Atlanta) too, but what sticks with me day in and day out is one of his quotes that really resinates with me- Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. Of course he said so many prophetic and profound things in his lifetime, and was a champion for Equal rights but when I am in a challenging situation (hello, LIFE!) I always remember that and think start with the faith, and then take it one step at a time and I will see this through to the end. My man Rob reminds me of this whenever I start to feel defeated. This morning, over a delicious breakfast he whipped up, Rob also showed me this wonderful article in last week’s New York Magazine (the one with the Edwards’ on the cover) titled, 50 Steps to Simple Happiness. #4 caught our attention first, but they are all worth reading. See which ones work for you and I hope it helps you find HAPPINESS. Let me know if you have any to add!
Thank you New York Magazine who included us & our Book City Jackets in this weeks mag. I love when NEW customers come in and say they saw us in the Magazine, and of course I also love our LOYAL customers who also saw the shout-out. We got plenty of both this week! I love these Book Covers, and think I might use them as placemats for my next book club meeting too. Quite clever, if I do say so myself. 3 Book covers in a tube, $9.95.
New York Magazine’s Fall Preview Issue is out and we are so happy to be a part of “Their Favorite things” feature where they write about One Hundred of the Top Picks in Stores Now (also their Shop-A-Matic this week). Our item is the Bunny Market Tote which we just got in and makes me smile every time I see it! How cute! How fun! How functional!
The cute little bunny comes in 4 colors (Black, Orange, Grey and Brown- perfect for fall!) and when you zip out the back, viola- you get a nylon tote bag! You can even attach the rabbit to the outside of the bag for more smiles while you are running around doing errands. They asked us for a quote, so I said “A quirky twist on a market tote.” We are honored to be in excellent company in the write up too- Barneys, Murray’s Cheese, Kiehls, Space NK, Kirna Zabete, Design within Reach, Bird, Mxyplyzyk and many more great shops (we are between Bottega Veneta and Kiki de Montparnasse). Very exciting! Bunny Market Tote is available in stores and online for $27. Get one now! (you might also recognize something else on their list we have in stock too- the MTA Mighty Wallet I wrote about a few weeks ago)
