Wash & Stain Bar To The Rescue!

Wash & Stain Bar, $6.95

I was going to start this post saying that one of these days I’ll be able to wear white without spilling on myself, but at age 32 it still hasn’t happened, so I think the odds are stacked against me. It’s fortunate I work in a place with a deluxe line of laundry care products. Rather than accept the fact that my new white blouse was ruined, or even that I was going to have to spend the rest of the day with tomato juice dribbled down my front, it seemed like a great time to finally give the Wash & Stain Bar a whirl. I’m a huge fan of The Laundress products, and swear by the Stain Solution, but I hadn’t tried the Stain Bar yet. It’s a compact little bar of soap, but it packs a punch! After wetting down the stain I rubbed the bar over the affected area and let is sit for about an hour. Mercifully I had clean gym clothes to change into, so I wasn’t topless in the interim. After rinsing it clean, the stain is completely gone! Whew. Since it’s small, and a solid, it’s great for travel. I hear it’s also great for scrubbing out ring around the collar!

The Laundress Wash & Stain Bar: You Asked For It–We Got It!!

We get great suggestions from our customers, and they help us find some really cool stuff. So when we got multiple requests for the Wash & Stain Bar, we knew we had to add it to our Laundress Collection. The Stain Solution is still a great all-purpose stain remover, but this little (but long-lasting) bar is perfect for stained cuffs and collars and even the dreaded pit stain! Ahem…are you listening gentlemen?? It’s also perfect to pack for travel, for general hand washing or stain emergencies. And it smells great! I plan to store mine in a drawer to do double duty as a sachet!

The Fly Lady is Soo FLY….

This morning I was cruising the internet looking for some couch options (we are in desperate need of new seating in our pad) and went to Apartment Therapy to see what they recommended. I immediately got caught up in “Best Cleaning Tips” of the year– it is January, after all- and since November & December were a blur from working seven days a week, our apartment sorely needs some TLC. Well, I read some of the comments on the post “Before & After: A 15 Minute Clean Sweep“– and  discovered the FLY Lady (I took note of the jabs at the graphics, which I poignantly displayed above).  Here is a lowdown from my intro letter (after  a few minutes of poking around, I decided to subscribe to the Daily Digest)-

FLYing means Finally Loving Yourself. I want you to have what I have: Peace of Mind, Pride in my home and a Passion for Living.

FLYing works for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you work outside of your home, stay home with children, are retired, work from home or a combination of any of these. You can FLY.

We are here to help you establish routines and build a basic weekly plan.

In a nutshell, the Fly Lady helps you organize your life by breaking your home into different zones– each of which we spend 15 minutes a day cleaning and organizing each day/each week. Here are the zones from Flylady’s site (highlighted zone is the one we are in now)-

  • Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room (January 1-7)
  • Zone 2: The Kitchen (January 8-14)
  • Zone 3: The Bathroom and One Extra Room (January 15-21)
  • Zone 4: The Master Bedroom (January 22-28)
  • Zone 5: The Living Room (December 29-31)

Sooo, we would spend 15 minutes a day (our Chicken Timers would be perfect for this) and declutter/clean in each zone and then repeat each month. January’s mantra task is Shining the Kitchen Sink. I dig it. I think I can do this. 2012 is going to be Flylady year to make our apartment more functional, and not so overwhelming when friends and family come to visit (thanks to our dear Cocolicious, this happens more than ever before!). Need some help cleaning? Check out our FULLY STOCKED section of Cleaning Products (Better Life, The Laundress, etc.) Let me know what you think!

Spring Clean Your Sweaters…

Winter’s over!! Tis the season to clean all your sweaters before storing for the summer. We’ve got everything you need to make sure your babies are well taken care until fall. The Wool & Cashmere Shampoo from The Laundress is sulfate-free and specially formulated to prolong the elasticity and life of your woolens and cashmere. It’s great for everyday washing by hand and machine, but the addition of cedar extract makes it perfect for end-of-season cleaning (just say NO to mothballs, people!).  $19 for a 16 oz. bottle washes 32 loads.

Also, by popular demand–The Sweater Stone! Fabric pilling is the bane of my existence. When the fibers of knitted fabrics become loose through wear they form balls on the surface. Not cute. Use this stone to gently brush away the pills and make your fabrics look new again. And they’re not just for sweaters! Use it on most knits, blankets, and upholstery, too! The Sweater Stone is $18 and can last up to ten years.

Winter Necessecity

With the cold weather upon us I have been wearing all my favorite sweaters and so am breaking out another bottle of The Laundress’ Wool & Cashmere Shampoo. No more dry cleaning bills. Save your sweaters and your wallet. The Laundress is fanatical about the proper care of beloved woolens & cashmere so they developed the Wool & Cashmere Shampoo by combining cedar extracts and sulfate-free shampoo to clean and preserve the natural components of the yarns. This product can be used for both hand and machine washing. The Cedar scent is perfect for both everyday washing and added care for seasonal storage. Tested and recommended by Cashmere designers. 16 fl oz. Highly concentrated- you will get up to 32 washes per bttle. $18.

First installment of DOES IT REALLY WORK? by Jessica Rall

The_Laundress_logoWe have a guest blogger for the next few Fridays in a new segment I am calling, “Does it Really Work?” Our trusty sidekick Jessica Rall took on the fun (!?!) task of documenting a few of her latest purchases from the shop and put them to the test. Today she regails us with her experiences with The Laundress’ Stain Solution (editors note here- this product is how I found The Laundress to begin with– as I was searching for a good product to remove stains from my favorite pieces of clothing, many I have had for DECADES and still cherish and wear all the time thanks to The Laundress)-

I love white. White sheets, white towels, a crisp white button-down shirt….but invaribly I will spill something on everything white I own: red wine, soy sauce, coffee (like today). Which leads me to my first edition of “It Really Works”. The Laundress products are the talk of the town. People come in all the time specifically for them and seem to be diehard believers in the line. Is it just the beautiful and elegant packaging? Is it that the products are 100% biodegradable and made from organic materials? Or perhaps it’s the absence of beef products found in many fabric softeners (excuse me?!?!?!). So okay, it’s beautiful, smells great, is made from good stuff, but Does It Really Work? I wanted to try out the Stain Solution so I decided to check out www.thelaundress.com as recommended by the label for stain removal “recipes” and watched a video on how to remove stains. And then I put it to the test. I created a nice big coffee stain on an old white shirt.

stain solution one I let it sit all day and over night to really set in. The following afternoon I applied the Stain Solution directly to the stain and let sit for a few minutes while I heated some water in the kettle. Just before it hit boiling I poured water on the stain, and let the whole thing sit in a hot bath for the rest of the day. And…..ta-da!!!!!

stain solution two

No more stains. So, yes it’s made with renewable resources. Yes, it’s free of dyes and artificial ingredients. Yes, it’s a plant-based product. Yes, it’s tested on the very human owners instead of animals. And, Yes! It Really Works!

Thank you Jess for that fine example of investigative reporting! You can get some Stain Solution at the shop too- $16 for 16 oz.
